Application procedure

Application to the Berlin Doctoral Program for Economics and Management Science is done online. The application portal will be open each year from February 1st until March 31st 2018. Successful applicants are notfied in April 2018.

Requirements & Supporting Documents

Admission requires a Master's degree (Fast Track applicants of couse apply with a Bachelor degree), preferably in economics, business administration, mathematics, statistics, or a related subject. Admission is highly competitive, as a rule of thumb, successful applicants will score at or above the 90th percentile in the quantitative and analytical section of the GRE General Test and have performed exceptionally in their previous studies. Evidence of creativity and inclination towards research will be taken into consideration. Please note that it is not necessary to find a supervisor before applying to BDPEMS. You will find your supervisor at the end of your qualification phase.

You will be asked to upload the following documents during application:

  • CV
  • a motivation letter stating research interests,
  • information on all previous studies, i.e. transcripts, certificates, etc. ,
  • Two letter of recommendation of academic referees,
  • GRE scores institution code (GMAT scores are only applicable for business applicants)
  • IELTS or TOEFL scores. You are exempt from handing in IELTS/TOEFL scores if English is your native language or you have obtained a university degree from an English speaking country.

Please not that incomplete applications canot be further considered.

Scholarships & Fees

The program offers a limited amount of monthly scholarships of up to 1200€ for a duration of two years. Scholarships are conditional on academic excellence and study performance and include an option for extensions for the entire duration of the PhD. The stipends are automatically extended on a yearly basis as long as the underlying performance criteria are fulfilled.

The program does not charge tuition fees at present. The universities charge an enrollment fee of approximately 280 Euro per semester. This gives you access to public transport in Berlin at no additional cost.

You are only eligible for a stipend as long as you not take up employment, e.g. a reasearch position. An extensive list with other scholarships for doctoral students as well as funding for postdocs can be found here.
