How can I apply for BDPEMS?

Application is done online via our application portal starting on November 15th, 2018. Please complete and submit your application as soon as possible, as referees will have to submit their letter of recommendation until the deadline as well! Incomplete applications as well as applications send via email cannot be considered.

Which documents do I need?

You will need to provide the following documents during your application:

  • curriculum vitae
  • letter of motivation
  • information on all previous studies, i.e. transcripts
  • Two academic letter of reference
  • GRE/ GMAT scores
  • IELTS/ TOEFL scores

Which institution will award the doctorate?

BDPEMS consists out of the Humboldt Universität, Freie Universität, Technische Universität, European School of Management and Technology (ESMT) and the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB) your doctorate will usually be awarded by the instution of your supervisor.

When will I find out about the results of the admission process?

Successful candidates will be contacted in April. Please refrain from any inquiries about the status of your application until then.

How long does it take to finish my Ph.D. within the BDPEMS program?

It usually takes about four to five years (full-time study) to finish the program.

How can I get a job at one of the faculty chairs?

Job offers are posted in the jobs section on our website on a regular basis or can be found on the respective chair website.

Do you accept applications from the field of engineering/mathematics/statistics? Can I also get a scholarship?


Are part-time studies possible?/Do I have to live in Berlin to take part in the program?

No. BDPEMS is a full time program that will require your full attendance of the courses.

Are all courses taught in English?


Do I need to speak any German?

No, although it will be beneficial for living in Berlin of course.

What is the difference between BDPEMS and IRTG?

BDPEMS is the umbrella organization for doctoral education in Economics and Management Science in Berlin. The International Research Training Group 1792 "High Dimensional Non Stationary Time Series" is associated to BDPEMS. IRTG students may take BDPEMS courses during their qualification period. You may indicate for which program you want to apply during the application process.

Are there any admission fees?

Neither BDPEMS nor any of the associated research training groups charge any tuition fees. To enroll at one of the Berlin universities, you will be asked to pay around 280 Euros each semester, which is in part for a semester ticket to the Berlin public transportation system.

What GRE score do I need in order to be admitted?

As a rule of thumb, successful applicants will score at or above the 90th percentile in the quantitative and analytical section of the GRE General Test.

Is it possible to apply without GRE scores?

Your application will be considered without GRE test results, but your chances of being admitted are much higher if you submit them. We therefore highly recommend submitting GRE test results.

Is GMAT accepted as a substitute for GRE?

Yes, but only for business candidates.

Are the results from all GRE sections relevant?

Yes, the results from all GRE sections will be considered.

How long are the GRE results valid?

GRE scores are reportable for five years after the test date.

I will graduate from XY university/from a program held entirely in English. Do I need to provide IELTS/TOEFL test results?

You don't need to provide TOEFL test results if your native language is English or if you earned a previous university degree in an English speaking country. If you are part of an English program in a non-English speaking country, test results will be required.

How long are my TOEFL/IELTS results valid?

TOEFL/IELTS results are valid for two years after the test date.

What TOEFL/IELTS score do I need in order to be admitted?

As a rule of thumb, successful applicants will score at or above 7.0 (IELTS) or 95 (Internet-based TOEFL).

I won’t be able to upload my test results within the given deadline. Can I send/upload them later?




Do I have to hand in a research proposal/statement of purpose?

You don't necessarily have to submit a full statement of purpose. Alternatively, you can describe in your letter of motivation what research topics you are interested in and name possible research questions/ideas.



How do I apply for BDPEMS as a bachelor graduate?

If you are planning to enter the program with a bachelor's degree, answer the question "Are you entering the program with a bachelor's degree?" (section "research profile") during your application with yes. Please note, however, that you will have to apply for one of the mentioned master programs (Master in Economics & Management Science, Master in Economics, or Master in Business Administration at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin).

Can I apply for both BDPEMS and MEMS/ Economics/ Business Administration through your application portal?




What is the status of my application?

After submitting your application, we sent you a confirmation via e-mail. This means that your application has been officially registered. Thank you! The actual evaluation will take place in April 2018. We therefore kindly ask you to refrain from any inquiries about the status of your application until then. Thank you for your understanding.



How high are my chances of getting a scholarship?

Usually we offer between 8 to 10 scholarships for BDPEMS and its associated program IRTG1792.

I already have a scholarship. Do I need to apply online?

If you already have an external scholarship, we would like to ask you to apply online like all other applicants. During the application process, you will be asked if you need funding. Please hit “Other sources of funding available” and specify the issuing institution and the duration of the scholarship.

How long is the scholarship?

Scholarships are granted for the duration of two years. Afterwards stipends are extened or students become research assistant at one of the chairs.



I want to apply but don’t know how to find the right supervisor. Can you tell me potential supervisors for my field of interest?

It is not necessary to find a supervisor before applying for BDPEMS or one of its associated programs. Students who are admitted to the program find their supervisor only towards the end of the first year of the qualification phase.



With what research interests can I apply?

You will find information on our faculty members on www.bdpems.de. Each member is listed with his or her research fields and affiliation. As BDPEMS is a cooperation of various academic institutions in Berlin, our faculty covers a broad range of fields.



I already took Ph.D. level courses. Can I transfer my credits to your program?

No general assessment can be made if previous courses can be accredited. Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.



Can I name business references?

No, your referees have to come from academic institutions.

How can I change one of the referees/the contact information?

After you cleared you referees for contact you can not change your referee. Please inform your referee beforehand that he/she will be contacted by us.

Can my referees send their letters via e-mail?

No, It is not possible for referees to send letters via email. Every referee will be contacted by us via email and asked to fill out a short questionaire about you and upload his or her reference to our website.

My referee is very busy right now/on vacation. Can he hand in the letter after the deadline?

No, letters send in late can not be considered. In turn you application is considered as incomplete and will not be further considered.



Can I remove already uploaded documents and replace them with others?

As long as you haven't submitted your application, you can delete and resubmit documents anytime. Once submitted, your application cannot be changed anymore.

Can I send three letters of recommendation?

Our application system only allows the upload of two letters of recommendation.

Can I upload the recommendation letters myself?


My referee wasn’t contacted. Can you help me?

Please check if you allowed us to contact your referees (by clicking on “Contact referee now”, which makes the box turn green). If your referee still wasn't contacted, it is possible that we are still in the process of checking the information you gave us. Make sure the name and contact information are correct. Private email addresses or referees with a fake identity will not be contacted.

Do you need original documents as hard copies or scans?

Scanned copies of original documents will suffice for now. We will ask you to provide the original documents after admission.

Is it possible to send the documents via mail instead of uploading them?

No, all documents have to be provided online. GRE/ TOEFL results results can be sent to us via mail as an exception, but in this case we cannot guarantee that they will be considered.
