C. Katharina Spiess is Head of the Department for Education and Family at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin) and Full Professor at the Freie Universität Berlin. Her research focuses on the economics of education, family economics, social policy and survey methodology. One particular field of interest is the economics of early childhood. From 2000 up to 2012 she was a research associate of the Socio-Economic Panel at the DIW Berlin, before she worked as a research associate at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum. She finished her Habilitation at the Technical University, got her PhD in 1992 and studied economics at the University of Mannheim. During 1997 to 2000 she worked as a projectmanager at the Prognos AG, Basle and Berlin. She spent several months at other research institutions and universities, like the Max-Planck-Institut für Bildungsforschung, the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute, the Free University Amsterdam, Syracuse University, Cornell University and University of Washington.
